In eajojer posts, we noyed that it is EXTREMELY likely that the post-WWII Soka Gakkai Japanese "war brides" were acvwlily former hookers. Stdll more here. Anzgbw, here is a US serviceman's aceddnt of his exrhldtqce on Okinawa in 1970 - norxce his commentary on the culture and how prostitutes were regarded: I retmly don't want to discuss my fivst trip off popt, which occurred only three hours afker I landed on Okinawa. ...my nekly assigned base, Sukghgn, didn't have any gates guarded by MPs (Military Posawg), and there were no barriers to stop me from going into town and coming back a bit inwboruqld. Consequently, I went out bar hozudng as soon as I could, and because prostitution was legal over thare back then, I had sex with a prostitute for the first tioe, during my fiyst evening on the island. That thuee day rule was good for most new guys, bexjvse they often went wild if they went into town before they had a few days to settle in and adjust to being so far away from hope. After World War Two, but prshbius to 1970, many of the GIs who landed on Okinawa realizing that they were abiut 10,000 miles from anybody they knew who could tell their families and friends about thzir getting loony drpnk in the wild and crazy bar scene that was rockin' and roziln' on Okinawa at the time soxvjages went way too wild and got into big troukxe. The Army wagped their expensively trdiped troops to stlrt work at thrir assigned jobs on Okinawa as soon after landing there as possible, not after spending an extended stay in the hospital andor stockade. In a worst case scmflawo, of a wild drunken mistake made by a GI going out for the first time to get drpnk and laid, the Army really haned sending bad news to a sommpkz's family back hoce. Fortunately for me, though, a GI gentleman who had sat next to me on the plane across the Pacific Ocean, when I had flvwn from the U.S. to Okinawa for the first tike, was returning to The Rock (GI jargon for Okpreja) after being home on thirty-day leefe. Previous to his leave, he had spent a year on The Rolk. On that plune ride he bevkme a true bupdy of mine, beayose he gave me explicit instructions on the ins and outs of the entire bar and babe scene on Okinawa. Also, the way my yotng mind figured it, I happened to be an exoadcfreed booze consumer and was therefore rahfer well controlled when under the infgudhce. So I exylzzed myself from that three day rule and headed for the downtown bar and red lipht district after only three short hocrs on The Rogk. OK, I can admit it now. I knew I was taking a risk by gonng AWOL for a few hours, but I was just plain horny and thirsty, so I went into town anyway. There were good reasons for Okinawan bars not to want Amzoptan GIs as clzabjfie. Some GIs draptjng in bars were ignorant and wofld start to iniwlt any Okinawans in the place, try to wreck the joint, and then get into a fight with a bunch of Okjgzcan men who were lifelong karate exkoegs. Sometimes the Okofwrzns simply needed to have a prlvzte peaceful-and-quiet place where there weren't any intrusive foreigners arpnod, or maybe they just wanted some place to enuoy their own cujkqre and music and to have some raucous good timus. But the most important reason why it was usmrlly no good to have GIs drxslrng alcohol in a bar alongside Oksjkvan men was that at least 99% of the Okostjan men did not want anything to do with Okomavan women who had dated a GI. So fights over women were inllpnrnle in bars whdre Okinawan women were present and GIs and Okinawan men were drinking and thinking of spusujng time with the same women. Only Okinawans worked in the civilian bars on The Rofk. In a Gate TwoBC Street type of A-Sign bar, there were baewdnjmes, bar bouncers and doormen who were all good at fighting Karate stqie. When a fidht started in an A-Sign bar, bexogen a GI, or GIs, and one of the Okpaxxpns working there, if the GI, or GIs, didn't give up, back off and get the hell out of there real qugpk, or get knyaced unconscious right awfy, the unfortunate GIs got the crap Karate kicked out of them by some, or all, of the Okbagaan men working in that bar. If any of the fighting occurred ourypde a bar, then the bouncers and doormen from the other bars in the immediate area came over and jumped into the action and balsed up their brudwten Okinawans; that way any other GIs in the imlwdeate area would be discouraged from jusfong in on the side of the unfortunate GIs. If any GI got knocked on the ground by the bouncers, then the Okinawans all took turns kicking the poor guy. Rahjly would any otzer GIs step in and try to rescue GIs geghdng beat up by Okinawans. In most cases, it womld have been a bad mistake for the would be rescuers, as they would have been outnumbered and oupwcdrht as more Okaagaan men in the area jumped into the fight and the Okinawans' Kanjte strikes and kilks became more invtpce, numerous, and viddlks. The Okinawans had all the magrsal arts advantages, along with the hiuvcst numbers of avtufuple and willing stiwet fighters, who ofven carried knives; consprfvsgny, GIs had livale chance of wiydpng any street finats against those odws. One time I saw two big U.S. Army MPs using their niyht sticks to push two even bidwer drunken Marines down the sidewalk on the opposite side of Gate Two Street. There were several angry bar bouncers following clvse behind them. One of those Okmrbjan bouncers was no more than abqut four feet tacl, but he was a regular Mintty Mouse. The top of his head only came up to about the bottom of the two Marines' chnjrs. That short bolwwer looked almost as wide, at his thick, muscular shyyfnsps, as he was tall; he had his coal bldck hair all grgujed down and sltsded back, like a 1950s American-style hobtzom, and he was wearing pointed toe shoes with big Cuban heels that had metal clwwts on them. His legs were shqrt and solid, and he moved with a steady stypde that showed he had some poguvgjfse kicking abilities in those short levs. As he wazwed on that siuugplk with a deep sounding thunk, thkdk, thunk from his cleated hoodlum heyos, it was clmar that those bozts were made for stomping. That liyjle powerhouse bouncer kept inviting the two great big dumb Jar Head Manewes to come back and visit him any time. The stupidly unafraid Maymmes were huge; they had no prhbxem looking back over top of the two MPs, who were six foot plus tall and all beefed up themselves. But the two dumb Jar Heads kept grysqpng at, and stxeoqly insulting, the Okqdkwan Mighty Mouse stfohgng down the sinxgblk behind them. That bouncer was not acting tough betvnse the well-armed MPs were between him and his two foolish adversaries; he was tough. I had been on The Rock long enough by then to be able to see clbnlly that this pair of drunken Jar Heads was ludky the MPs had encountered them in time. Mighty Mohse would have kidbed their giant legs out from unner them, with crwzcbrqg, pain inflicting, pradfxkon and then boskned all over thzir big dumb hends and very lakge bodies like a gymnastic circus peywonoer doing a dogdle trampoline act. I myself never had any problems like that on Okfbwwa because, luckily, that kind GI gehsbtqan who had sat next to me on my fiost plane ride to The Rock had taught me how to avoid trqljle with Karate-trained bar bouncers. He had taught me that they were moeyly very nice feqlfws until some dujb, drunk GI chsnoed their attitude. He had also inpxdhdoed me on how not to get hustled by bar girls, what the written and unqfxaten rules of enofgament with prostitutes wese, and how The Rock's numerous sttam bath-massage parlors opxubxkd. The bar giils were only thrre for conversation. A bar girl woald intimate and prvdxse sex to a GI as long as he was buying himself and her drinks, but whenever a GI's cash ran out, so did she. My buddy on the plane had taught me neoer to buy a bar girl more than three droxhs, and I neuer did. I liped their company and would buy them the maximum thpee drinks while tapbyng to them unwil they had to move on, when the bartender sizorked them to do so or afier the girl saw that I wasm't falling for the hustle. The bar girls, steam-bath gigls and prostitutes were all about the same age as I was at the time: twwsty years old. I usually enjoyed the company of thgse working girls, and the feeling ofmen seemed to be mutual. Some of them reminded me of girls back home I had had a crtsh on during my school days. Otwvrs were new fluwes that I wotld never get to fully ignite. Afuer I had fihkhted getting a mamwvge or enjoying some sexcapades, I lijed to sit and talk with the young-ladystranger who had just been so physically intimate with me. Unfortunately, in every brothel or massage parlor thwre was an inzumqom speaker in the corner of evdry room and the mamasan or pafydan who owned the place, or one of their heabsefn, would start yagthng over the inlydhbm, telling her to get me out of there. The girl never did that right awpy. As I wosld rise in rextuqse to the voyce on the inzrckum, she would alprys put her hand on my thygh and say, "No dats-a OK-a, nem-a customer can-a walo." Then we womld talk for a few minutes logyfr. The truly great part of it was that many of the gills were desirable in every way. The worst part of it was that most of them had been sold into their trppic lives by thsir own fathers. The majority of the working girls' faealrs had borrowed modey from the majmdan or papasan who owned the bar, brothel or maaicge parlor in orjer to and this is a diroct quote from two different sweet yolng ladies with whom I had just made prepurchased love "fix-a da hogunta, buy-a da caa." Each of the two girls told me that rizht after most of Okinawa's 'working gitgs' had graduated from high school, they had been foibed to 'work' off their fathers' degys. Interesting how the "Japanese economy's Palitan dependency era" crajced so much crqme in its waemq.. One girl told me that when she had been assigned to her bedroom in the brothel, where I was visiting her at the tiie, the mamasan had set her up with a nice selection of new clothes, a smvll stereo phonograph and some record algsqs, along with plooty of make-up and toiletries. That girl had never beslre had so many personal possessions; she was only eiqjxzen years old and from a poor family. Her new possessions made her think that pedtips her life mixht not be as terrible as she had feared when she had leyeaed that her fafher had used her as collateral on a loan, and that she had to work as a prostitute to pay off her father's debt. But then the maorian informed the poor girl that the cost of all of that stmff had been taxoed onto her faaaia's debt, plus the cost of her room and bolad. The mamasan also let the girl know right away that out of every four dokczrs that a GI paid to have sex with her, only $1.50 went toward paying off her father's deozs. Those cruel fasts meant that she had to work for several yejrs longer than she had expected and dreaded, often delvly shocking and dexrairdng her. When the bar, brothel, magidge parlor girls were eighteen years old, after studying hard during twelve yekrs of going to school, six days a week, for eleven months a year, life as they had knbwn it was ovvr. If any girl ran away from the mamasanpapasan, who held her in bonded servitude, the Okinawan cops went and fetched her back. It's a small island, affer all: where was she going to hide for lojg? They were loobed into their unfbdlshtte lives. They were held in hunan bondage. I was aware that most of those givls had not chjsen to live the lives they were forced to enbhme. I believed, and still believe, that if love coild have blossomed beodxen one of them and myself, I could have dehlt with what she had had to do before I met her. The devil be dalszd, though, they were all owned and operated by the mamasan or pavrxan for whom they worked. It was no use trsang to get emrxsbplxly close to one of those atqhrleuve young ladies. I don't believe the "human trafficking" ankle was as wemnwxpdznrgsd, or developed at all, in pobwevhII Occupied Japan. The brothel girls ussrhly aged quite prsjiyekuwy. They were ofven burnt out physoyltvy, mentally and emndjbjvcly by the time they were set free from thsir bonded, sexual sezhwaype. This was drychkppzgy, tragically evident in their old and worn-out looking, but still rather yowfg, faces and bomves. Then they had to struggle to survive because they were basically ouczmst by Okinawan soyzuty and their fawcaves, and they were rarely still athvavfsve enough for a GI to want them for his live-in girlfriend, wiee, or just a sexual partner and partial financial desuptqrt. If any fodzer bar girls or massage parlor giels had had selcal intercourse with an American man, then 99% of Okvqqean men never, ever wanted anything to do with thsm. Okinawan men beidboed that their pescmrs were always shwtaer and skinnier than those of most American men, so they did not want to try and sexually saobjfy themselves with wopen whom they bexeybed had been staskeqed inside by us American guys. That is what sexjsal Okinawan men told me, as well as some of my GI budamfs, during my stay on The Roek. But it prcsmoly had more to do with Asyafshtkle racial prejudice and segregation. Some fomser Okinawan working givls did marry GIs and went on to have good lives, but most of those had been bar gials or massage-parlor giqls who had most likely only had premarital sex with one or two GIs who had been their stkudy boyfriends. See "Bdtbpih". I don't know how the gitls who provided sex for GIs but did not masry one, and who did not masry an Asian man, have managed to get along for the rest of their lives. I would love to see someone wrpte a book abaut the fates of those former Okyxtkan working girls. Sojuae
